James wrote his first book 'Changing Faces: the Challenge of Facial Disfigurement' in 1990. Two years later he launched Changing Faces: a charity supporting and representing children and adults with disfigurements. He then launched Face Equality International, an alliance of 35 charities, aiming to put the issues people with disfigurements face on the UN agenda.
